Many women are afraid to even try wearing red lipstick. Ladies, there's nothing to be afraid of. Red lipstick is a timeless classic (very much like the little black dress). Contrary to some myths, red lipstick makes a good daytime look too. Sure, you can vamp it up for evening or Halloween, but if you go easier on the eyes and choose a beautiful shade of red, without gloss, it's great for day.
If you've been thinking about it, but never actually got the courage to walk out wearing bold red lips, I encourage you to do it! (it can be a liberating experience ;) However, there are things that you have to do right, or the experience can be catastrophic.
- Choose the right shade that will complement your complexion and the shape of your lips.
- Keep it safe and don't wear too much eye make-up. A very subtle eye-liner and mascara will do.
- Exfoliate your lips. Gently exfoliate and moisturize to create the perfect blank slate for applying lipstick. You have to exfoliate your lips if you're wearing lipstick (especially one with matte finish). Lip glosses are much more forgiving, but lipstick require prep time.
- Use lip-liner. Don't skip this step, it's critical and definitely worth your while. Without lip-liner, your lipstick can begin to 'bleed-out' and this is definitely a look you don't want to be wearing out in public. Try to follow the exact shape of your lips and don't go too crazy trying to draw your own shape, unless you have a lot of experience and know what you are doing. Be prepared to use concealer around your lips.
- Before you walk out, make a quick stop by the mirror and make sure you're not wearing lipstick where it doesn't belong (teeth).
